WEST LIGHT
An Exhibition by Susan Hughes
1st September - 2nd October
The West Light is Rathlin Island's lighthouse where tens of thousands of seabirds gather in the summer months in a hive of breeding and feeding activity. However the title of this exhibition also refers to the light and dramatic scenery in places on the west coast of Ireland which, as well as Rathlin, have long been a rich source of inspiration and research for Susan Hughes.
Over the last ten years Hughes has undertaken numerous artist residencies in coastal locations of Ireland, Norway and Iceland. As a traditional fiddle player you will often find her using her fiddle as a bartering tool, swapping tunes for local stories or a ride in a boat, experiences which feed directly into her art making.
Susan Hughes is an artist from Belfast using painting, video, installation and writing as processes and end products in her practice. She received a distinction in her MFA in 2021 from the University of Ulster receiving the Centre for Contemporary Art (Derry/L'Derry) and Platform Arts (Belfast) Graduate Awards and has been long listed for the RDS (Dublin) graduate award.
