sullivan’s travels (pg)

If you attended our preceding Laurel and Hardy screening, you’ll see the relevance of this superb film. Written and directed by Preston Surges, this 1941 classic combines laugh out loud humour, drama, and old Hollywood glamour with a reminder of the goodness of people and the importance of community and generosity. Handsome Joel McCrea leads as the spoilt, self-involved successful film maker John Sullivan, who, when accused that his films convey no understanding of the harsh reality of life for ordinary folk, tasks himself with crossing America as a hobo to discover some truths. On-screen romance is provided by the stunning Veronica Lake, and the two argue and provoke as they travel together, whilst they of course inevitably fall in love. This is a remarkable film and the ultimate pure escapism from the festive frenzy beyond our theatre doors.
