Steinbeck celebration

The Film Society presents Gary Sinise’s adaptation of Steinbeck’s seminal novel published in 1937. Starring Sinise alongside John Malkovich, the film remains loyal to the novel’s plot which follows the paths of two migrant field workers, George Milton and Lennie Small, in California during the Great Depression. The two friends dream of a better life, only for the reality of a sequence of tragic events to intervene. Aptly, Steinbeck took the title from Robert Burns’ poem To a Mouse, which read “The best laid schemes o’ mice an’ men / Gang aft agley.” (The best laid schemes of mice and men / Go oft awry). The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 1992.
