cultural crossings - film screening

o brother, where art thou? (12)

As part of the Cultural Crossings Celebration, we are delighted to screen this superb Coen Brothers classic. Loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey the movie depicts the adventures of Everett Ulysses McGill (played by George Clooney) and his companions Delmar and Pete in 1930s Mississipi. Sprung from a chain gang and trying to reach Everett’s home to recover the buried loot of a bank heist, they are confronted by a series of strange characters whilst also discovering their hidden musical talent, achieving a hit single as The Soggy Bottom Boys.

The dominant bluegrass score is integral to the story and became the surprise chart hit of 2001, going on to win a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. Since then it has garnered numerous awards and sold over seven million copies. The film features a stellar cast including George Clooney, John Turturro, John Goodman and Holly Hunter and won six international film awards as well as two Academy Award nominations. The film is a double delight – the outstanding bluegrass score will have your feet tapping whilst the hilarious film will have your sides splitting!
It’s a new thing, classic myth from both literature and the movies, commingled, set to great folk music, and untrammeled by any sense of predictability, urgency, realism or believability but hypnotic, graceful and seductive - Stephen Hunter, Washington Post

Presented in association with Cultural Crossings, which is promoted by the Provost of The Coleraine Campus, University of Ulster, in partnership with Causeway Coast Arts. They share a commitment to supporting the arts and engaging with local communities in the Ballymoney, Coleraine, Limavady and Moyle Council areas. In pursuit of this common interest they are presenting a programme of arts and cultural events that reflects the cultural influence of emigrants from Ireland. The Irish and Ulster-Scots traditions enriched the music and art of their new homelands as emigrants brought with them their instruments and repertoire. This theme provides the scope for a programme which combines traditional Celtic music and art with contemporary influences and reflects the historical links with Ireland and Scotland. Please also enjoy a host of other Cultural Crossings celebrations happening in Ballymoney, Coleraine and Moyle areas.
