a tale of two men
donal ballach o'cahan, sir thomas phillips and the archaeology of (old) limavadyAs part of NIEA’s Archaeology Days in June, this talk by Professor Audrey Horning will present the results of the 2009 archaeological investigations at the O’Cahan castle site within the Roe Valley Country Park. The castle itself was built in the 16th century as an O’Cahan stronghold, but was acquired by English military man Sir Thomas Phillips in the early 17th century. Phillips, who designed and built Newtown Limavady, redeveloped the castle as the centre of a fashionable new manor. Come and hear what the archaeology revealed about the castle site and about lives of the two men, and hear some surprising stories about local life in the early plantation period. Attendees are also invited to have a say in the development of further archaeological research at the site.
About the speaker: Professor Audrey Horning is an historical archaeologist and Professor of Archaeology in the School of Geography, Archaeology and Palaeoecology at Queen’s University Belfast. Her research focuses upon the comparative archaeology of European expansion and she has directed archaeological investigations in eastern North America as well as throughout Ireland.
